MTD Deadline Calculator

Pick your start year and reporting basis to see every Making Tax Digital filing deadline for your first two years, plus the payment dates around them — then take them with you as a calendar file with built-in reminders. Nothing you choose leaves your browser.

When are you required to start MTD?

These thresholds are your combined gross self-employment and property income — before any expenses, not profit. Not sure which applies? Check your start date first.

Which quarters will you report?

The calendar election is made in your software before your first quarterly update of the tax year and is locked in for that year. It changes the periods you report — the deadlines stay exactly the same.

Your income sources

Each source files its own quarterly updates — same deadlines.

Your MTD deadlines from 6 April 2026

Don’t lose your last normal Self Assessment: your 2025/26 return is still filed online the old way, by 31 January 2027. Tax is paid the old way too: any 2025/26 balancing payment — plus, where payments on account apply, your first payment on account for 2026/27 — falls due that same day, with the second on 31 July 2027. A year later, 31 January 2028 brings your first Final Declaration (for 2026/27) and the 2026/27 balancing payment — two different obligations on two consecutive 31 Januaries is the bit people find most confusing.

Soft landing, precisely stated: for the April 2026 cohort, late quarterly updates in 2026/27 don’t earn penalty points — that’s the whole easement. It does not cover the Final Declaration (points apply from day one), late payment, or any year after 2026/27, and all four quarterly updates must still be filed before your Final Declaration is accepted.

  • Quarterly updates are cumulative year-to-date figures and create no tax bill — payment dates are unchanged by MTD.
  • Deadlines are treated as fixed dates: no published HMRC rule moves a deadline that falls on a weekend or bank holiday, so plan for the date shown.
  • Updates can be sent up to 10 days early where the quarter’s information is complete.

The calendar file includes reminders 14 and 3 days before each deadline, and covers both years above, the payment dates around them, and your last normal Self Assessment. It’s generated entirely in your browser — nothing you choose here is sent or stored. Re-downloading after a change updates the events instead of duplicating them.
